Web 2.0
In the old days of the internet, back in the nineties, if you wanted to get something published you had two options: get a technical expert to do it for you or become a technical expert and do it yourself. The technical skill barrier to publishing content was high. Now we’ve got what is called Web 2.0. That means different things to different people, but to business people it means “no nerd required”.
This is a collection of some of the most excellent Web 2.0 tools and sites. We use many of these tools to rapidly and effectively publish web content. Some people ask “Why do you have to use tools like that if you’re web experts?” The answer is simple, they let us do the work better. Web 2.0 sites and presences allow focusing on the marketing instead of the technology. They let us move beyond the medium and into the cross-media message. You can do it too, we’re here to help.
Social Media
Social media lets people who don’t own websites publish content too. Facebook, for example, allows people and businesses to create a Page and publish content to it with little technical knowledge. Presences established across social media sites allow a brand to have a voice outside their own website.
Search engines
Search engines are what internet users use to find what they’re looking for on the internet. Google is the most used search engine. Getting free traffic from search engines involves optimizing website content in a manner that the search engines expect. That’s where a good search engine expert (SEO) is useful to employ.

Web Hosting
There are a few ways to have a website hosted. The most simple way is to use a service like WordPress.com or Tumblr to host a starter blog. If you want to have your own domain, a site that you control completely, then you’ve got to put your site somewhere on a computer connected to the internet. Web professionals use services that specialize in managing hosting computers connected to the internet 24/7. These are called hosting providers.
We use a hosting provider called Acenet in Southfield, Michigan. Their service level, speed and rapid customer support have made us loyal customers since before 2006. We’ve tried quite a few hosting providers, but they’ve been the best to us. Other hosting providers that we’ve had good results with are 1&1 and Bluehost.
Knowing how to use the services that are offered from a hosting provider takes a bit of a learning curve. Some basic UNIX administration skills don’t hurt.
Managed Hosting
Don’t worry if learning how to manage a web account isn’t on your calendar; we offer managed hosting services. Managed hosting involves our enabling the same kind of account you’d get from a hosting provider, but on our exclusive dedicated servers. We take responsibility for managing the details of it for you. This includes keeping your content management system patched with the latest updates, updating plugins and other code, monitoring and basic e-mail administration. Lots of our clients have found this to be an easy way to be confident that their site is being maintained professionally.
Content Management
Content management systems, also referred to as CMSes, are software systems that reside on a web host. They “publish” a website, that visitors interact with just like any other website. The difference is that it’s a lot easier to publish new web pages on a CMS based website than it is to publish web pages without one. WordPress, the most popular system, is designed for non-technical people to create new pages on their own easily and quickly. That’s what we use the most.
